Your Excellency,

I have the honour to accept the appointment

to the post of Puisne Judge of the Straits Settlements which

was offered by telegram from the Secretary of State for the

Colonies and which Your Excellency kindly communicated to

me yesterday.

Will Your Excellency convey to the Secretary

of State the very high appreciation 1 entertain of the ho-

nour that H. M. the Queen has been graciously pleased to con-

fer on me and of my assurance that I will endeavour to ful-

fil the duties appertaining to the office to the utmost of

my ability.

I cannot thank Your Excellency too much for

your kind recommendation af me to the Secretary of State

which I am sure has gone far to procure me the appointment.

Subject to Your Excellency's approval I shall

be prepared to leave HongKong for the Straits Settlements

on 11th. April next.
